I Am So Grateful…

This morning as I was praying, I found myself expressing my gratitude to God for who He is and what He does. I am so grateful……

  • For the variety, intricate detail, and exquisite color of creation (Psalms 8).
  • For giving us the Bible, His inspired, living Word, so that I can study and more fully know him (II Timothy 3:16).
  • For not only forgiving me (Romans 10:9, 13) but also removing my sins as far as the east is from the west. We can plant our feet on the North and South Poles but we can never catch up with the east or west (Psalms 103:12).
  • For His faithfulness that is new every morning (Lamentations 3:22).
  • For His tender mercy and steadfast love (Lamentations 3:22).
  • For hearing and answering my prayers (Matthew 7:7-11 and James 5:15-16).
  • For being willing to give His only son, Jesus, as a sacrifice for my sins so that I can have forgiveness of sins and live in relationship with a Holy God (John 3:16).
  • For feeling my sorrow and grief (James 5:11).
  • For always walking beside me in my times of testing and walking through difficult times (fire & water). (Isaiah 43:1-3 & Psalms 66: 10-12).
  • For being my refuge and strength in times of trouble (Psalms 46:1).
  • For being my strength when I am weak (Isaiah 40:29).
  • For never tempting me but when I are tempted by the evil one, provides a way of escape (I Corinthians 10: 12-13, II Peter 2:9 and II Thessalonians 3:3).
  • For desiring a relationship with me as my Father (James 4:8).
  • For knowing me as a unique person, created by God himself (Psalms 33:13-15, Isaiah 43:1, 7).
  • For holding the hearts of kings in his hand (Psalms 33:10 and Proverbs 21:1).
  • For being my rock, my shield, my hiding place (Psalms 18:2).
  • For being with me in my darkest moments (Psalms 40:1-2)
  • For being my refuge and strength in times of trouble (Psalms 46:1)
  • For promising to be with me even in death (Psalms Psalms 23:4 and 48:14).
  • For being a God of peace and speaking peace to his people (Psalms 85:8).
  • For living in me in the form of the Holy Spirit (I John 4:13).
  • For providing angels to guard and protect me (Psalms 34:7).
  • For preparing a home in heaven for those who love you so that I can spend eternity with you (John 14: 1-4).
  • That one day you will say, “enough is enough” and crush the head of the serpent (Satan) and win triumphantly over evil (Revelations 11:15 and 12:9-12).

The message at church today focused on Psalms 91. “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty God”. The Hebrew word for Almighty is “El Shaddai” which means God-the enough.

What an amazing God we serve. He is Almighty God-the enough and I am so grateful.

God’s Faithfulness

I have been thinking about “God’s faithfulness”. I have experienced it over and over and it is probably the one characteristic of God I think about and proclaim the most.

Psalms 119:40 “Your faithfulness endures to all generations.”

Lamentations 3:22 “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.”

History gives us something to look back and reflect on. History gives us a second perspective on life events.  History gives us our story to share with our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  History shows us our journey; some of it is good, some of it is tough and some of it we prefer to hide or throw away. History can not be changed but we can change the outcome of the future.

I think about the  song “Give Me That Old Time Religion” which we occasionally sang…”It was good for Paul and Silas… it was good in the fiery furnace…. and it’s good enough for me.”  Each generation has its own opportunity to pass on to the next their faith stories; stories of God’s goodness, stories of mountain top experiences and dark valleys. It is so important to tell theses stories to our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Each generation has its own history, and its own uniqueness.  We live in a totally different world now than we did “back-in-the-good-ole days,”  but we are still people of faith and our God is still the same.  The important thing is can we see the goodness and faithfulness of God in the ebb and flow of life, the hard times, the good times, our griefs and losses. Looking back and telling our stories help us remember. The words of the Psalmist still ring true, “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you are with me. Your rod and your staff they comfort me.” (Psalms 23)  Like a Good Shepherd, the same God still walks beside us.

Proverbs 30 talks about a generation of people that…

  • Curses their fathers
  • Does not bless their mothers
  • Does what is pure in their own eyes
  • Are not washed from its filthiness
  • Whose eyes are haughty and glances disdainful
  • Whose teeth are like swords

Psalms 45:17  talks about a different kind of generation of people.  A people that remembers God and praises His name.

“I will remember your name to be remembered in all generations. Therefore the people shall praise you forever and forever.”

We can choose.   Joshua, the man God chosen to lead the children of Israel after Moses death, spoke pointedly when he said, “Choose today whom you will serve. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”   (Joshua 24:15)  Our decisions will have a profound impact on the generations that follow. Which generation will you be?  What heritage will you leave?

My challenge to us ….claim the faith of our fathers and make it your own.  Pass on to your children the goodness of God. Praise the name of the Lord, remember Him and you will raise up godly offspring that honors and serves Him.

Isaiah 25:1 “O Lord, You are My God. I will exalt You, I will praise Your name, for You have done wonderful things, Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.”

Hopefully, when our time on planet earth is finished, we can say like the Psalmist (40:10) “I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness…I have declared your faithfulness…I have not concealed your righteousness and truth.”
