Hawaiian Cheese Bread

I made this recipe today for a meal at church and it was a hit with quite a few wanting the recipe.  It is a favorite with our family.

1 loaf (1 pound) Hawaiian Sweet Bread (I get it in the deli section at Food Lion)

8 oz. block of Swiss Cheese (Can use Mozzarella Cheese) cut into thin slices (I cut from the narrow end of the block and it is fits perfectly into the slices of bread)

3 slices red onion, chopped

1/2 cup melted butter

1 T. minced (or powder) garlic

1 tsp. salt

Cut bread diagonally into 1 inch slices to within 1″ of bottom. (I cut it while in the tin foil pan it comes in. This makes an easy guide to know where to stop cutting) Repeat cuts in opposite direction. An electric knife works great.  Insert cheese slices into bread. Combine the butter, onions, garlic and salt; spoon over bread.

Wrap loaf in foil. Bake 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Serve warm.

Yield: 12-16 servings
